By BBN Staff: Now in its seventh month, the global COVID-19 pandemic has affected more than 8 million people as of today, June 15, 2020.

The pandemic, which originated in Wu Han, China back in December 2019, has affected a total of 8,104,124 according to Worldometer.

Of those who contracted the virus, some 4,187,421 have managed to recover; however, some 438,421 people lost their lives to COVID-19.

The United States continues to lead the world in number of infections, surpassing 2.1 million with over 118,000 deaths. Brazil is second in line with over 888,000 confirmed cases and almost 44,000 deaths.

Despite having three newly-confirmed cases within the past week, Belize has managed to keep reported COVID-19 deaths at only 2.

Director of Health Service Dr. Marvin Manzanero said that there was a wide range of factors that attributed to Belize’s outcome in containing the virus, chief among those were the lockdown measures and the cooperation that the public gave health authorities when those measures were implemented.
