Protected areas and National Parks reopen

Posted: Monday, June 15, 2020. 6:41 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Today, the Ministry of Fisheries, Forestry, the Environment and Sustainable Development announced that protected areas under its management, including national parks, nature reserves, natural monuments and wildlife sanctuaries will now reopen.

The announcement came via the newly established National Biodiversity Office (NBO). The NBO said that the protected areas will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and advised that all visitors to practice social distancing and keep all other regulations still in force under the State of Emergency regulations.

“Belizeans are invited to come out and enjoy the beauty of these areas and are asked to be good stewards by abiding by all park rules,” the NBO said.

Protected areas were closed to the public in late March, following Belize’s first confirmed case of COVID-19 and the resulting lockdown measures implemented by the National COVID-19 Oversight Committee in an attempt to suppress the spread of the virus.
