“Spraying is not the final solution to mosquito problem,” says Ministry of Health

Posted: Tuesday, June 16, 2020. 10:43 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The Ministry of Health has acknowledged complaints coming from all over the country that mosquito populations are out of control but has stressed that sending the spray truck around is not the solution.

Director of Health Services Dr. Marvin Manzanero explained that the Ministry has been following up on the complaints and even conducting research into the species of mosquitoes which are prevalent right now, as some concerns were raised that the mosquitoes being seen now are above the average size. Manzanero notes that while the Ministry is conducting spray activities, the real issue that needs to be addressed in communities across Belize is the elimination of mosquito breeding sites.

“You can spray as much as you want to but if you don’t eliminate the breeding sites, you will be spraying forever or until the rains go away,” Manzanero said.

He also explained that the high mosquito populations has the Ministry on high alert for emerging dengue and malaria cases, adding that incidents of either will prompt a scaled-up response which begins with spraying followed by a more comprehensive approach to detecting and eradicating breeding sites.
