More Belizeans come home, Ministry of Health says repatriates not a major health risk

Posted: Saturday, June 20, 2020. 8:54 am CST.

By BBN Staff: A total of 43 Belizeans arrived in the country yesterday on a repatriation flight following being stranded abroad due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Ministry of Health (MOH) took the opportunity to tell the public that any positive COVID-19 cases that may result from their arrival is no cause for alarm.

The group came in around 10 a.m., were placed on a bus and taken to the Princess Hotel, where they will remain in quarantine for the next two weeks as per the established protocol. Director of Health Services Dr. Marin Manzanero told our newsroom today that the repatriation of Belizeans in a planned and controlled manner is not a major concern, but those making illegal border crossings are.

“Of the last four cases, two of them were border jumpers,” Manzaneero said. “The people making these illegal trips across borders to Mexico and to Guatemala and returning with contraband are the concern.”

Manzanero also said that around 30 percent of the Belizeans that applied to come back into the country have already been brought in and that the last amount that came home have finished their mandatory quarantine, so they are headed back to their homes tomorrow.
