By BBN Staff: The COVID-19 pandemic, in a matter of seven months, has affected over 9.3 million people and changed the rules of social interaction so drastically that Belize’s Ministry of Health (MOH) thinks that things might never return to “normal” unless a vaccine is developed.
Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services at the MOH, said that the latest data being reported internationally suggests that human immunity developed from prior infection alone might not be enough protection, underscoring the need for a viable vaccine to safeguard populations all over the world.
“The recent data seems to suggest that…if I become infected, I am not going to produce antibodies for a sustained period, it would seem to be that it is only going to be for a period of months and after that, it would mean that I would be susceptible to another infection. Immunity does not seem to be a lifetime immunity,” Manzanero said.
He went on to say that it is possible COVID-19 will become seasonal like the flu, stressing that the only comparison to the flu is the fact that there will be potential cases annually which does not take away from the fact that COVID-19 is more contagious and deadly than the flu.
