Neighbouring countries reeling from COVID-19, should Belize be concerned?

Posted: Tuesday, June 23, 2020. 3:59 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The COVID-19 pandemic is intensifying in both Mexico and Guatemala, Belize’s closest neighbouring countries, which may put Belize at risk for an increase in positive cases.

Director of Health Services in the Ministry of Health (MOH), Dr. Marvin Manzanero explained that data gathered from these countries show an increase in both the number of new cases and deaths related to COVID-19.

He said that Othón P. Blanco, the municipality in Mexico where Chetumal is located, saw over 400 positive cases as of midday today.”

Guatemala, in their report earlier today, talks about a potential crumbling of their health system if the numbers continue to escalate at the rate they have been the past couple of weeks,” Manzanero said.

Manzanero added that the MOH is monitoring the situation in both countries closely because illegal border crossing to and from both countries is an ongoing issue in Belize.
