COVID-19 deaths in Latin America approaching 400,000

Posted: Thursday, June 25, 2020. 3:09 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Deaths from COVID-19 in Latin America are steadily approaching 400,000, Reuters reports.

An article published this week analyzing the level of impact of the pandemic in Latin America showed that the number of positive cases in the region tripled in just a month, going from 690,000 to over 2 million, with the number of deaths regionally now around 390,000. Brazil, the second-most affected country from COVID-19 in the world, and Mexico are the major contributors to the overall positive cases and deaths for Latin America with around 166,000 and 88,000 deaths respectively.

“High poverty levels and large informal sectors – which mean many workers cannot afford to quarantine – have combined with overcrowding in cities and inadequate public healthcare, particularly in isolated rural communities, to hamstring Latin America’s fight to stem the contagion,” Reuters notes.

The article also noted that several countries within the region are projected to see exceedingly worse results within the next few months.

Belize is listed as one of the countries that are faring off the best against the pandemic, alongside Paraguay and Uruguay which all have less than 1,000 positive cases and deaths.

Mexico’s success in tackling the virus will have large implications on Belize as the year progresses given the level of travel between the two countries. Prime Minister Dean Barrow said today that Belize’s land borders will remain closed with no clear indication of when they would reopen, given the ongoing situation in the region.
