By Aaron Humes: Belize’s only international airport, the Philip Goldson International Airport, will reopen on August 15 after careful consideration and calculation, according to Prime Minister Dean Barrow.
The Prime Minister noted that several states from the United States – Florida and Texas in particular – are among the new American epicenters for COVID-19.
But the Prime Minister maintained that though some already believe the Government has taken too long, it was clear they could wait no longer as according to health experts, there is no end to the sea of COVID-19 troubles.
While lost economic contributions can be recovered, the P.M. said, lost lives cannot, and so everything has hedged on balancing safety and restarting tourism, which contributes up to 40 percent of GDP.
Joining the Prime Minister at the head table today are Drs. George Gough, Ministry of Health CEO, and Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services; Director of Tourism Karen Bevans; Michael Singh, Director of Technology in the Prime Minister’s Office, and CEO of the Ministry of Human Development and chair of the National Task Force on COVID-19, Judith Alpuche, who will speak on various aspects of the plan to reopen.
