By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister Dean Barrow says responsibility for managing COVID-19 protocols now passes to Director of Health Services Dr. Marvin Manzanero when the State of Emergency expires in five days’ time.
The various statutory instruments passed under the State of Emergency consistently emphasized social distancing, a curfew in the late evening, opening hours for approved and essential businesses and latterly wearing of masks in public to stop potential transmission.
Dr. Manzanero’s office includes the National Quarantine Authority, which has powers to manage the spread of diseases in Belize, and it will be up to him to draft the statutory instruments.
Dr. Manzanero has said separately that he is working on these revised protocols for release as early as next week.
The Police Department and Belize Defense Force continue to maintain authority for on-the-ground enforcement.
