Westrac Limited supports education by donating to three Belize City schools

Posted: Thursday, June 25, 2020. 7:49 am CST.

By BBN Staff: At a time when COVID-19 has ravaged Belize’s economy and parents have to prepare to send their children back to school in August, Westrac Limited has stepped in to alleviate some of the burdens for parents and three Belize City schools with a donation of school bags and tuition payments for students.

The recipient schools are Queen Street Baptist Primary School, Unity Presbyterian Primary School, and Living Hope Preparatory School.

Westrac handed over the bags to Queen Street Baptist and Unity Presbyterian today, at brief ceremonies on the school grounds. Westrac’s Julian Thiessen explained that the donation consisted of around 500 bags, meanwhile, the total in tuition payments will be around $35,000, as the company paid the tuition for all students at Unity and Queen Street Baptist.

“The information we got that tourism (the downturn caused by COVID-19) possibly affected Belize City more than, per se up north where agriculture is a larger portion of the economy,” Thiessen said.

Lavern Gillett, principal of Queen Street Baptist, explained that the donation is much appreciated as many parents are facing financial hardship due to COVID-19 and some of them have not been able to cover last year’s tuition. She also added that the school is working with those parents to ensure that they continue to send their children to school while they find the means of making the payment.
