House to discuss almost US $30 million in COVID-19 related loan motions

Posted: Friday, June 26, 2020. 10:01 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Nearly BZ $60 million in loans, either directly or tangentially related to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, will be brought to the House of Representatives in Belmopan today for debate.

After a truncated session a few months ago to extend the State of Emergency, this is the first session with the full House expected in attendance (likely minus Rt. Hon. Said Musa and Gaspar Vega) since the introduction of the Budget on March 5.

The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) is loaning US$15 million for COVID emergency response support; and just over US$1.013 million to implement a drought recovery scheme to support sugar cane farmers rebuilding after last year’s drought.

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) is loaning US$12 million to support continued safety nets for those impacted by COVID-19 economically.

And the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) is loaning US$1.9148 million to support Rural Belize development in climate resilience as part of a value chain.

We’ll have more when the meeting starts after ten.
