By BBN Staff: Today, the Lord Ashcroft COVID-19 Relief Fund donated $214,000 to the Belize Customs and Excise Department for the purchase of two X-ray machines to assist in the continued battle against the coronavirus pandemic.

Chairman of the Lord Ashcroft COVID-19 Relief Fund Committee, Lyndon Guiseppi handed over the cheque to Customs Comptroller Colin Griffth, which will cover the purchase, installation, and operator training for the machines.

The machines will be used to scan baggage for travelers entering the Philip Goldson International Airport as a means of reducing contact between them customs agents.

With efforts on the way to reopen the Philip Goldson International Airport, the Government of Belize reached out to the Lord Ashcroft COVID-19 Relief Fund Committee to seek financial assistance to purchase two X-ray machines,” the Fund explained.

The Fund also reaffirmed its commitment to support GOB’s efforts in battling the pandemic and called on all Belizeans to follow the guidelines for safety issued by the Ministry of Health and other relevant authorities.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow announced this week that the airport will be re-opening on August 15.
