By Aaron Humes: It was hardly the ideal time, says Prime Minister Dean Barrow, for the type of rhetoric he observed in Friday’s meeting of the House of Representatives.
Instead, he said, it was “politics as usual” from the Opposition People’s United Party (PUP) on the revision of the Budget and introduction of supporting loans for COVID-19 response and the agriculture industry.
“As you said, it is a time of perhaps the worst crisis that we have ever experienced, and so I would have hoped for a more enlightened, more nationalistic, more solidarity-type approach from the Leader of the Opposition, but it is clear that opportunism is what rules the day…”
The Opposition used the debate on the motions to bring forth their suggestions and complaints concerning the handling of the COVID-19 crisis, having voluntarily pulled out of the various committees formed by the Prime Minister in March.
Having thanked the Prime Minister for the opportunity to work together to get through the initial stages, the P.U.P. says it is now time for them to get back to their position of being check-and-balance against the Government and prepare for the upcoming general election.
