By Aaron Humes: As soon as the 15th of July payroll, says Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner, the Belize City Council will reinstate full salary for all of its 460 staff and councillors pending revenue projections.
In fact, staff pay which was deferred will eventually be remitted.
Wagner told us, “[Revenues] will never be fully recovered but you keep working at it. Since reopening gradually, like I told you the last time we met, that we are looking at the numbers, we are doing a phased-in approach. Our numbers have continuously improved, and so we recognize that we cannot forever have our staff be on half salary, some of them on 75 percent salary…”
And the Council neither had to terminate any staff nor reduce services greatly, even for sanitation, the Mayor added. He gave tribute to staff and the Christian Workers’ Union (CWU) which represents them for working with them during tough times.
More than 1,000 residents have visited the Traffic Department on Magazine Road weekly to do business and another 600 have come to City Hall, and thus revenues have recovered, though not according to Wagner to where they would want to be or where it was previously.
