By Aaron Humes: Following on from his expressed belief that entrepreneurship is what will drive Belize and Belize City out of our pandemic-related troubles, Mayor Bernard Wagner and the late Hubert Pipersburgh fast-tracked a first-ever program to find and promote small business owners in the tricks of the trade.

Today, the program was formally launched with the awards to the first 20 participants who were trained last week.

Two of those, Elsy Rosales of “Everything Elsy” and Marsha Gillett of “For You By Me Productions,” spoke of what led them to the program.

Rosales lost her job and home last year, but inspired by a gift for a friend, she now makes edible basket arrangements.

For a decade, Gillett has been making personalized and customized items such as pillows, cups, and so on.

Each said her experiences drove them to want to be the best at what they do.

Mayor Wagner promised participants that in this “new normal” they will not be abandoned after initial assistance, but also reminded that they now have the tools to succeed all their lives whether in their current businesses or any other.

Funding is being provided by the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Commonwealth Local Government Fund (CLGF).

Other sponsors are Blue Coral Management, Almog Holdings, and Insurance Corporation of Belize.
