Outstanding fishers of 2020 honored

By BBN Staff: The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) congratulates Lennox Leslie and  Dermin Shivers, both of Placencia, who were selected as outstanding fishers for 2020.

Leslie, who has been fishing for over 35 years, is an active advocate for sustainable fishing, and a member of the Placencia Cooperatives.

Shivers a sport fisher, turned commercial fisher, was nominated by his common-law wife, who describes him as an all-around fisher.

Due to the COVID-19, Shivers has moved into commercial fishing in order to take care of his family and provide for consumers in southern Belize.

Both men will receive cash prizes from The Nature Conservancy, AMC Belize and WCS, totaling $1,500.

In addition, they will receive Punta Fuego T-shirts and Certificates of Achievement.

Congratulations were extended to Leslie and Shivers, on behalf of the Fisherfolk Planning Committee, which is made up of Mccap Fisheries, Fisheries Department – Belize, Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism, Caribbean Network of Fisherfolk Organizations, and WCS.
