CARICOM Secretary-General says CARICOM Day 2020 like no other in history of celebration

Posted: Saturday, July 4, 2020. 2:53 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Annually, today July 4 is recognized as CARICOM day, a day for the Caribbean Community to celebrate the strides of the community.

July 4th is celebrated because in 1972, four CARICOM heads of Government affixed their signatures to the Treaty of Chaguaramas.

CARICOM’s Secretary-General, Irwin Larocque said that CARICOM Day 2020 is like no other in history.

“We celebrate today in an environment dominated by the continuing health and economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Larocque said.

The Secretary-General stated that this is a time of testing the Caribbean Community and that the nations have done well in addressing the pandemic.

“So far, we have demonstrated that capacity for resilience, which has been the hallmark of our response to the numerous challenges we have faced over time,” he added.

As the community celebrates the 47th anniversary, Larocque reminded of the many strides of CARICOM.

Larocque extended gratitude to everyone working together to confront the pandemic.

He also expressed hope in rebuilding the nations and their economic prosperity.

“What we have demonstrated time and again in the face of persistent devastation from natural disasters is a steely resilience, and an ability to rebound and restart.  The bedrock of that characteristic is the spirit and determination of Caribbean people, and the banding together of our Member States in times of adversity,” Larocque expressed.

Happy CARICOM Day!
