By BBN Staff: The group of men detained for the brazen Thursday afternoon robbery staged at the Scotia Bank Belama branch on the Philip Goldson highway have been formally charged for the crime of robbery after they were apprehended by police while trying to make their escape.

Anthony Barrow, 29; Leon Westby, 24; Jason Mckenzie, 28 and a minor were arrested and charged for the daring robbery. Their accomplice Gasman Young died while receiving medical treatment after being shot by police during their escape attempt.

The crew entered the Scotia Bank Belama branch around 3:00 p.m. on Thursday and staged a daring heist and fled the bank with over $20,000 in cash before cops caught up with them trying to escape by boat.

Officers fired shots at the group of men, injuring two of them. Police saw the group of men running out of the Scotia Bank and boarding a dark Dodge Caravan.

Police pursued the van and upon reaching the junction of Henderson Avenue and Seashore Drive all five men were seen exiting the van and boarding a small skiff, which was on the seashore.

Police fired shots, injuring two of them. The other three jumped overboard and were captured by police.

A search of the skiff led to the discovery of a school bag containing two .9mm pistols; one loaded with eight .9mm live rounds and the other with three live rounds and the stolen cash and cheques.

The total amount of cash recovered $21,699 in cash and $11,378.00 in cheques.
