US Chargé d’Affaires remarks on 244th Independence of the United States

By BBN Staff:  Today, July 4, Americans all around the globe are celebrating the 244th anniversary of the Independence of the United States of America.

Chargé d’Affaires of the United States Embassy in Belize, Keith Gilges in a recorded speech made today, said that 2020 has been an unprecedented year- in good and bad.

“This very video is in itself a testament to just how different this year is from others. For years, the U.S. Embassy community has hosted our annual July 4th Reception on our embassy housing compound. In a normal year, I might be making this speech in person before a large crowd right now. But 2020 is different and with the continuing threat of COVID-19, we opted to protect the safety of our guests by postponing our 2020 Independence Day Celebrations until sometime later in the year,” Gilges said.

Gilges wishes all American citizens and Belizean friends, colleagues and neighbors a happy 4th of July.

“In the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson wrote: “We hold these truths to be selfevident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights – that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” And yet as lofty as these sentiments are, America has often struggled to live up to these same standards of treatment for all of its people. Our Constitution, which provides the framework for our system of representational democracy, was revolutionary in its time. These two documents, based on the ideals of the Enlightenment, created a system of government that is both functional and aspirational. It protects essential liberties such as the freedom of speech, religion, and assembly,” Gilges added.

Gilges also underscored the fundamental rights that all Americans have  and urge to hold ourselves to the high standards espoused in that very same first declaration — that all people are created equal.

In the time of this pandemic, Gilges says that Americans will evolve and grow in order to rise to the occasion just as they have done when faced with challenges.

Gilges said that only in democracies do we have the opportunity for governments to greet dissenters with open minds and open hearts.

“Whether you are American or Belizean, we encourage all of you on this American Independence Day Holiday to aspire to the ideals set forth 244 years ago,” he expressed.
