By Aaron Humes: The otherwise separate murders this weekend of Raheem Myles and Raheem Faber in Belize City are linked to retaliation and a budding rivalry which Police say they intend to stop in its tracks.
19-year-old Faber was shot at the corner of Ebony and Mayflower Streets late Friday night by a shooter who fired into a crowd. Police are said to be questioning multiple persons.
Faber’s death was said to be linked to a reported sale of a gun, which was then reportedly used to kill him. 23-year-old Myles, who was known to Police but had abandoned the criminal lifestyle in the last year, was shot on Saturday night at the other end of town on Fabers Road, apparently in retaliation for Faber, according to Commissioner of Police Chester Williams. A female who was holding a child in her arms was also hit by gunfire.
Senior Superintendent Alejandro Cowo of Crimes Investigation Branch (CIB) said police are investigating multiple leads, including alleged criminal activity on Faber’s part and potential rivalry between gangs in the immediate area.
“These gang members will not be allowed to have their way in the City; this simply will not happen,” the Commissioner said bluntly.
After three months on lockdown – in part because of a separate order by police and the overall state of emergency which started in April – there is a worry it is business as usual.
But Williams insisted he will not sit with the factions as they have requested, insisting it is not his job to babysit them, and “if they start their fool, I will do what I have to do.” He added that the Conscious Youth Development Program (CYDP) has been doing a good job and he will not step in their way.
Police have stepped up patrols in the area of the incidents and other potential hotspots, specifically to avoid retaliation.
