China leads race for global COVID-19 vaccine

By BBN Staff: China, the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic, is leading the global race in finding a vaccine, Reuters reports.

China boasts two vaccines within the country to have reached the third stage of testing and also boasts the third vaccine globally to reach that stage. The company Sinovac Biotech is set to begin the third stage of its(SVA.O) experimental vaccine later this month.

An article published today, notes that the medical research unit of China’s People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) , has been a driving force in China’s efforts to fight infectious diseases, while working in tandem with private firms.

“While a laggard in the global vaccine industry, China, where the new coronavirus is thought to have originated, has brought state, military and private sectors together in a quest to combat a disease that has killed over 500,000 people worldwide. ” Reuters said.

Reuters also noted that China has been largely successful in driving down COVID-19 infections making it difficult to conduct large-scale vaccine testing, and that only a few countries are willing to work with China to do the testing, following scandals in the past with reference to Chinese vaccines.

Several countries are pushing to have vaccines ready as soon as possible, including the United States and the United Kingdom, both of which have vaccines in advanced levels of testing.
