New Scenes of Crime office rented from Barrow and Williams firm

Posted: Wednesday, July 8, 2020. 3:56 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Scenes of Crime division of the National Forensic Science Service (NFSS) is moving to prime new digs in the center of town – the former Barrow and Williams law firm offices at 99 Albert Street.

According to Minister of National Security Michael Peyrefitte, he only found out the final choice when he was asked to tour the facility on Monday, and the Prime Minister had not been directly told – Peyrefitte said he would find out on the news like the rest of us.

And that is because the NFSS director, Gian Cho, had complete say over the change of venue from Queen Street Police Station.

Peyrefitte explained: “It was the place that provided the best space for the amount of rent that we would have to pay. The people who work there are really excited about finally they’re having the space to work in and they feel like they can produce much more efficiently given where they are working now. I am sorry that Musa and Balderamos doesn’t have an ex-office space that they could have rented to make it not look political, but that was the space available, that was the convenient place that we could rent for the job we wanted to do and so we didn’t think about it that way. We needed the space and we got the space.”

The rent is to the tune of $6,000 per month, but Peyrefitte said the first choice for the new facility ended up not being available and others were rejected as unfit for purpose.

The NFSS’ laboratory remains on the Price Barracks Road in Ladyville, next door to the Belize Defence Force (BDF) facility.
