New York Times list Belize as a recommendation to US tourists

By BBN Staff: As the global COVID-19 pandemic rages on, the spike in confirmed cases in the United States has prompted numerous countries to issue a travel ban on US-based tourists. In a travel writing piece published this week, the New York Times directed travelers to Belize as one of the destinations they can head to if they feel the need to travel.

The article, titled “I’m a U.S. Citizen. Where in the World Can I Go?” lists 22 countries in alphabetical order, that US tourists either have access to already or will have access to soon. The NY Times notes that Belize is scheduled to reopen the Philip Goldson International Airport on August 15 and that guests who have proof of a negative Covid-19 test within the previous three days can use a “fast track” entry lane, while others will have to pay for and undergo testing at the airport.

“Visitors must stay at a “Tourism Gold Standard” hotel, which can offer full services, thereby lessening the interaction with locals. No rental cars will be available at first, and parks and tourist sites will only be accessible with an approved tour operator. Face masks are required in public,” the NY Times said.

The article also warned that anyone testing positive won’t be allowed to leave the country, but instead must isolate for at least 14 days at their own expense.

The mention in the NY Times adds to a growing list of positive international mentions for Belize, despite the ongoing pandemic. The decision to reopen the airport in August has had a polarizing effect in the country with many fearing that the US tourists, which make up around 67 percent of all tourist traffic in Belize, may usher in a wave of COVId-19 infections that the country is not prepared to handle; while others praise the decision as the country desperately
needs the revenues from tourism.
