By Aaron Humes: The Public Service Union (PSU) will move on from its former home on the Hilltop, East Ring Road, Belmopan, in a month’s time after agreeing to an out of court settlement with the Belmopan City Council.
In 2018, the Council sold the Union’s Hilltop Property to the private company, Simplex Designs Limited based in Corozal. The Union sued both but Simplex convinced Supreme Court Justice Courtney Abel that the PSU had no case with Simplex and that was struck out.
The Union then moved into negotiations with Belmopan City Hall and this has resulted in the obtaining of new surveyed land on Unity Boulevard near the future site of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Council has further agreed to loan its equipment and staff to help the PSU upgrade the land. The agreement was approved by Acting Chief Justice Michelle Arana.
The bottom line for Simplex, according to its attorney Steve Perrera, is that his clients get to make use of the asset that his clients paid for.
Asked specifically about plans that his clients may have for the development of this property once the PSU vacates, Perrera stated, “Well, the client has been working on some plans, but they haven’t finalized anything because they were waiting until this matter was brought to a complete end. But, we’re happy that it turned out the way it did, and we’re happy that our clients remain with the property, and that our clients have the right to continue to utilize the property as it so pleases.”
