By Aaron Humes: This morning members of the University of Belize Faculty and Staff Union (UBFSU) are marching from the National Assembly to the University’s Central campus in Belmopan to draw attention to the lack of information concerning the University’s plans following reported financial exigency.
While President Clement Sankat has claimed that relevant information is available and the Union is welcome at the negotiating table, the Union wants specifics.
For instance, will some be asked to take on more responsibilities? Will some classes be postponed? Will salaries be cut?
One member we spoke to pointed out that the University is autonomous and not all decisions regarding education apply to them. For example, UB lecturers got 5 percent salary increase after pressure when other teachers were getting three years of increased salary and increments a few years ago.
We’ll have more from Belmopan as it happens.
