UDP gears up for 2nd leadership convention

By BBN Staff: The United Democratic Party (UDP) is gearing up for its leadership convention on Sunday, July 12, 2020.

The race for the next leader of the UDP will be between John Saldivar, Patrick Faber and Wilfred Elrington.

Saldivar was elected leader of the UDP in February but that was short lived due to allegations of corruption connected to the trial of convicted fraudster Lev Dermen.

UDP Chairman Michel Peyrefitte said that the convention, which will be held at the ITVET compound, will be a contained event, as the COVID-19 global pandemic is still ongoing.

The format of the convention will see delegates arrive by district, vote and then be required to leave. Campaigning inside the premises, including the placing of flyers and banners will be prohibited.

“We understand fully well that the Belizean public would not appreciate any type of serious social gathering like that with the numbers that those things can produce while we are extremely worried about COVID 19,” Peyrefitte said.

The UDP administration has been in office since 2008 after campaigning on the premise of transparency and accountability.

The party under the leadership of Dean Barrow have managed to keep the PUP out of office for well over a decade now.

The new leader of the UDP will take the party into the general election in an attempt to gain a 4th term.
