By Aaron Humes: Sometime this afternoon, Patrick Faber will find out if he has managed to turn opinion in the United Democratic Party on his qualifications for leadership.
John Saldivar will find out if he has been able to hold on to the position he rightfully won five months ago before being stripped for improper associations.
And Wilfred Elrington, a longshot to beat either, will see if his nonchalant attitude has convinced his party to give him a second look.Polls are now closed as of 1 p.m. in the race being held at ITVET Compound in Belize City. Counting will now proceed and a winner will be declared by mid-afternoon. Earlier Faber told reporters that he has secured the backing of some of his fellow parliamentarians who had previously supported Saldivar, chief among them Shyne Barrow and Pablo Marin of Corozal. But he said he did not try to promise anything new, merely to reemphasize his prior record.
The race is expected to be much closer than the 115-vote blowout Saldivar took at the Civic in February. Whether the two men who embraced afterward that evening will change positions on the dais will be determined in a few hours and BBN will have it as it happens.
