By Aaron Humes: As he publicly thanked the many who supported him this afternoon – whether from the beginning, like certain fellow standard bearers and delegates, or for this convention, leader-elect of the United Democratic Party (UDP) Patrick Faber observed, “that proves that this is a democratic process and that the United Democratic Party is alive and well when it comes to the democracy.”
But there are hurts under the surface, not least of all his defeated opponent, John Saldivar, and so Faber acknowledged that there must be “a moment of healing” and that his job one is to reach out to those who voted against him.
The widely-held opinion is that outgoing party leader and Prime Minister Dean Barrow heavily influenced the outcome, turning a deficit of 115 votes to a slim victory of only 19 in five months, and Faber said as much: “As I told you on Friday, I believe that the Prime Minister voted for me; yes.”
And Faber promised to weld “the winningest machine” there ever was in time for the elections now that the convention is over. “We understand while there might be some issues, we will work it out and we will be unified, and we will make sure that when it comes to that election day that we will be ready.”
