Caribbean passes 65 thousand cases of COVID-19 but nearly half have recovered

By Aaron Humes: As of Sunday COVID-19 has passed 65 thousand cases in the Caribbean, reaching 65,716.

Of these, about 51 percent or 33,639 cases have been closed. 31,993 patients have recovered and just 1,646 have died, according to Buzz Caribbean (the number of recovered cases was not available for Puerto Rico).

Eight countries and territories of 32 have no active cases. These are St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Curaçao, Dominica, Sint Maarten, Grenada, British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, and Saint-Barthélemy.

The Dominican Republic continues to lead the way with 1,418 new cases reported and a total of 44,532 confirmed. 21,459 have recovered and 794 have died.

Next in line is Haiti (6,690), which shares Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic; French Guiana (5,949); Puerto Rico (2,435) and Cuba (2,426).

Belize is fourth from bottom on the list with four recently reported cases taking our total to 37 – six behind French dependency Saint Martin and 15 ahead of Saint Lucia. Among countries with active cases, Belize’s 2 reported deaths are joint-second with the Turks and Caicos Islands, trailing joint leaders the Cayman Islands and Montserrat with one each.
