Posted: Monday, July 13, 2020. 8:54 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The Ministry of Health continues to monitor the growing number of cases of COVID-19 in neighboring countries.

The Ministry is closely looking at the cases in Guatemala and Mexico, especially the neighbouring state of Quintana Roo.

Neighbouring Othon P. Blanco has 883 active cases up until midday yesterday and 48 related deaths.

The growth rate in the southern part of Quintana Roo is 4.45, one of the highest in the entire Mexican territory; the growth rate is alarming and it has been flagged by the central government authorities in Mexico.

As for Guatemala, they are reporting 757 new cases for Saturday, July 11th.

Mexico now ranks 8th in terms of total number of cases but ranks 3rd in total number of deaths with a higher than average case fatality rate at 11.7%.

Guatemala and Honduras rank at #51 and #52 respectively in terms of total number of cases, both close to 30,000.

The Ministry’s active surveillance continues and they anticipate the identification of further cases this week as part of our mapping exercise.

Do continue to stay safe, practice physical distancing, wear a mask and listen / follow the official sources of information!
