By Aaron Humes: Another top member of the United Democratic Party is retiring.
Pickstock area representative and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington told reporters on Sunday that for him it was a choice of being elected leader or ending his political career, even though he was an acknowledged longshot.
He said he wanted to offer himself despite the serious nature of Belize’s troubles which any future political leader would face, but having been rejected (he only got ten votes in Sunday’s convention), he now ends his political career, which he reckons started all the way back in the 1960s. He was first elected to Pickstock, however, in 2008, then re-elected in 2012 and 2015.
Wilfred Elrington is the last prominent member of that family’s political dynasty; brother Hubert served two terms in the Lake Independence division and was a Minister of Government. Hubert’s son and Sedi’s nephew, attorney Orson, alias O.J., is a candidate for Freetown and daughter Alifa was a Belize City Councillor.
Elrington says Alifa, in particular, is not interested in running to succeed him and he will not have a hand in choosing a potential successor.
Whoever is the new candidate faces Anthony Mahler of the People’s United Party.
