Central American locusts destroy crops in Peten

Posted: Tuesday, July 14, 2020. 10:58 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Prensa Libre Guatemala reported that the presence of locusts are putting at risk large numbers of corn, beans, sugar cane, tomato, banana, coconut and mango plantations.

Farmers in Peten are concerned that their crops are being invaded by the Central American locusts.

Since July 10, the insects have invaded several fields, mainly corn.

Guatemalan authorities say that they have never seen a plague like this one and are trying to implement measures to minimize the impact.

The damage to the crops and fields is evident and authorities fear that the spread of the locusts would cause direct impact to many farmers.

Agricultural authorities remain alert for the locusts in Peten, where it was first reported in Dolores.

The authorities have begun to act to control the insect outbreaks since it has had an impact on the Agriculture sector.
