University of Belize braces for hard times – salary cuts of 25 to 5% being recommended to the Board

By BBN Staff: The University of Belize issued a memo last week sharing some of its proposed action plans to survive the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The University explained in detail that the Government (GOB) subvention has been reduced from $11 million to $8.34 million. This represents a cut in the subvention of 24.2%.

Faculty and staff union sent a letter calling on the Board and administration of the institution to share details of the University’s state of ‘financial exigency.

A meeting was held today and the President of the University is recommending salary cuts of 25 to 5% along with other cost cutting measures to the Board of Trustees.

Among the many cost-saving measures to brace for the impact brought on my COVID-19 pandemic, the President is proposing to increase teaching loads to try to reduce adjuncts contracts  by 75%.

Faculty and staff may also see a reduction in allowances and the restructuring of some departments.

UB President makes recommendations for tiered salary reductions and cut in adjunct contracts.

UB President informed that the projected cash loss is of $7.13 million for the new academic year.

With relation to applications, there is a 37% reduction in comparison to last year.

In addition, he proposed that all increments for employees be frozen for the 2020-2021 financial year.

The President is also proposing to save money with a reduction in utility bills since most courses will be done online.

The Board of Trustees will make a decision on August 1, 2020.

The UB Faculty and Staff Union is consulting with members about the proposals. President of the Union, Dr. Pio Saqui said that the discussions are still ongoing.
