Belizean artist Katie Usher’s new e-book calls readers to a place of reflection

Posted: Wednesday, July 15, 2020. 10:55 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Katie Numi Usher, a Belizean artist who has been working in the country’s creative sector for 12 years, is calling Belizeans to ask existential questions with the release of her new e-book.

The 20-page e-book, which is titled “Katie Numi Usher,” is a collection of photos and commentaries spanning the length of her artistic career. It was produced in collaboration with the Image Factory Art Foundation and is the first publication since the foundation reached 25 years of publishing, promoting and exhibiting various projects in Belize and beyond.

Usher told our newsroom today that the content of the book emphasizes the correlation between art and history, and her hopes are that those reading will begin to analyze the norms around them.

“I want the readers to challenge the narratives they are told. Why is the south side of Belize criminalized? There are beautiful things that come out of the south side, so why does the media only show you the crime? All I want you to do after reading this book is to ask why?” Usher said.

She noted that one of the pieces in the book that was the most significant to her was the photo of her sitting in front of a chalkboard with some 70 names written on it, the names of everyone that had been murdered in Belize City up to the time the photo was taken in 2015.

Usher said that it was impactful because among the names was that of Kareem Clarke, a Belizean journalist who was gunned down in 2015.

“I used to read his articles all the time. He would tell you that the people being murdered were not just statistics, they were somebody’s uncle, son, father.  Unfortunately, Kareem would end up dying from the same thing he warned us about.”

The eBOOK can be downloaded for FREE at www.docdroid.net/FfKQbGy/knu-ebook-july-15-2020-pdf. The printed matter book sells for $20 at the Image Factory or you could order from [email protected].
