Evangelical Association concerned over Supreme Court appointments

Posted: Wednesday, July 15, 2020. 4:38 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The National Evangelical Association of Belize (NEAB) has expressed grave concern over the appointment of two Supreme Court justices which, it describes as advocates of gay-rights advocacy group UNIBAM.

NEAB said it is deeply troubled by events occurring in the Judiciary of Belize regarding the recent appointments of two Supreme Court Justices, as well as the delay in confirming the position of the Chief Justice.

“We are witnessing the erosion of a free and independent Judiciary in Belize as politicians exert pressure upon this extremely important branch of our nation’s governance. We note with great alarm that two UNIBAM attorney advocates have been appointed to the Supreme Court, and that an ambitious billionaire is pulling strings for the appointment of another UNIBAM attorney advocate! This is the day we have been warning about!” NEAB said.

It added that while judges may be entitled to personal views, they cannot be advocates of any cause.

“The NEAB calls on the proper authorities to do right by the people and nation of Belize. To protect and preserve our Judiciary and keep it as a beacon of Justice free from all bias. We call on all Church leaders, the Bar Association, community leaders, private sector organizations and all men and women of conscience to speak out against this attack on the independence of the Judiciary. We call on the Judicial & Legal Services Commission to re-advertise the two vacancies for Judges. We further call upon the Governor General to stay his hand in signing the appointments and seek legal advice on this seminal issue of urgent national importance.”
