Southern Environmental Association lawyers up following “defamatory” Facebook post

Posted: Thursday, July 16, 2020. 8:16 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Southern Environmental Association (SEA) has threatened legal action against a person it claims has maliciously defamed its integrity through a Facebook post.

The post, made yesterday, alleged that SEA was preparing to use a caye to which it has some interest as collateral for a bank transaction.

For legal reasons we cannot publish the name of the offender, but notes that the person once enjoyed a high level of prominence within the environmental community.

SEA stressed that the information was inaccurate and misleading, and demanded that the statements made on the matter be retracted and a public apology be made. SEA further noted that the caye in question does not form a part of the protected areas system as the post alleges and that it shares its interest in the caye with a private owner and therefore could not participate in the alleged bank transaction.

“SEA continues to be responsible custodians of all resources entrusted to us, as now more than ever, the marine resources of Belize need to be protected and made resilient to both environmental and economic changes, so as to continue providing sustainable livelihood to our Belizean people,” SEA said

Up to the time of publishing this article the recipient of the attorney’ s letter has not replied.
