By BBN Staff: The BK Sports Group, formerly the BK Volleyball Foundation, assisted the sporting careers of some 38 student athletes over the weekend by hosting the Belize Basketball Futures Camp on Saturday.

The camp brought athletes together with coaches, former Belizean semi-pro basketball players and Jarrell Velasquez, a Belizean skills trainer that operates in China. The National Channel was also a part of the event, taking video footage of exhibition games being played.

Berisford Codd, manager of BK Sports Group, explained that the event was geared towards creating scouting profiles and scouting videos for the players so they can use those profiles as they seek opportunities for scholarships in places like Canada, Mexico and the United States.

“We’re collecting data on things like their height, their weight their jumping ability, their sprinting speed so that you get a baseline dataset on where they are and where they need to go,” Codd said.

Bryton Codd, one of the founders of the BK Volley Ball Foundation, explained that the foundation started off as a way to get Belizean players opportunities to advance themselves with opportunities abroad, but saw the need to expand as athletic trainers and coaches began inquiring about Belizean athletes from other disciplines.

“We saw that the system we’ve created in the BK Volleyball foundation is working so we decided to expand it to different sports to also create opportunities for other young people from varying sports disciplines,” Codd siad.

Karym Coleman and Bryton Codd founded the original foundation, which was the the first player-led initiative for the sport of volleyball and advocated for players to get scholarships abroad. The new BK Sports Group will take a phased approach to including other sporting disciplines.
