Ashcroft COVID-19 Relief Fund donates to schools

Posted: Tuesday, July 21, 2020. 1:57 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Education has received $200,000 from the Lord Ashcroft COVID-19 Relief Fund to fund its push to get schools ready for reopening on August 10.

Executive Chair of the Belize Bank Limited Lyndon Guiseppi, standing in for Lord Ashcroft, handed over to Ministry representative and Chief Education Officer Dr Carol Babb, who stood in for Minister Patrick Faber.

The donation will primarily be used for buying hand washing basins and special armchairs to physically distance students in 103 schools countrywide.

In most schools, Dr Babb said, students would share a long bench three or four at a time, not conducive to the necessary social distancing at this time.

Guisseppi said the Bank has long worked with the Ministry and that education is near and dear to Lord Ashcroft’s heart.

The Fund has been active since April and has made various donations in the area of health and social protection.

We’ll have more later on from Dr Babb and the chair of the Association of School General Managers concerning preparation for the return of schools.
