DOE cancels forthcoming environmental impact assessment (EIA) consultations

Posted: Wednesday, July 22, 2020. 11:45 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Ahead of this evening’s planned meeting on the Port of Belize cruise port project, the Department of the Environment (DOE) has canceled it and forthcoming consultations “due to unforeseen circumstances.”

A statement issued this morning reads, “In consultation with the National Environmental Appraisal Committee, all public consultations for the environmental screening (EIA) process have been temporarily postponed until further notice. Therefore, any planned site visit and public consultation for EIA reports will be rescheduled for a later date.”

The Department does not go into details, but environmentalists had intended to strongly oppose the green light of the Port project due to concerns about dumped material from expected dredging around the Port area potentially impacting the Barrier Reef, in and around Turneffe Atoll.

Various environmental groups jointly and separately wrote to DOE and NEAC outlining their concerns.
