Leader of the Opposition condemns use of violence by authorities

Posted: Wednesday, July 22, 2020. 1:54 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Leader of the Opposition, John Briceno has issued a statement condemning the use of violence by the authorities against peaceful protesters at Port of Belize Limited.

The Christian Workers Union (CWU) held a peaceful strike inside the Port compounds today.

The workers were sitting on the ground when police began advancing toward them.

According to CWU President, Mose Hyde, the Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams said that the workers could have remained in the compound once it was peaceful.

Hyde now questions the directive given to the police to tear gas the workers and advance at them with violence.

“We call on everyone involved to find a just and equitable solution to the problem at the Port of Belize Ltd,” Briceno said.
