By Aaron Humes: The United Democratic Party executive committee appears to have settled on a replacement for incumbent Orange Walk North representative Gaspar Vega.
According to reports the chair of the Committee has reported to party leader-elect Patrick Faber that teacher and community leader Carlos Zetina is the unanimous choice to stand in the seat.
He will face the PUP’s Ramon “Monchi” Cervantes, who was narrowly defeated by Vega last time out.
Vega, who supported Belmopan area rep John Saldivar in the recent National Convention, had clearly indicated he would not serve with Faber and within hours of the convention had submitted his resignation. The ex-Lands and Agriculture Minister had been tipped for a return to power with longtime friend Saldivar until the latter was forced out over his ties to Lev Dermen.
Cervantes and Vega have had a heated rivalry dating back to the death of Ramon Cervantes Sr., in which Vega was accused of having a hand which he denied. A defamation case is still pending in Supreme Court.
