By Aaron Humes: The United Democratic Party (UDP), separate and apart from the Government it controls, today declared its support for the waterfront workers presently engaged in a struggle with the Port of Belize Limited.
The party calls it “incomprehensible” that the facility has moved to terminate employees despite it making money in its view.
That it is doing so while entertaining a proposal for expansion to include a cruise port (which Cabinet effectively put on hold), it says, is “unconscionable” and “heartless.”
But the UDP lays the blame on the decision to privatize the facility under Luke Espat, who did business with Lord Ashcroft’s Belize Bank. And the PUP’s relative silence on the issue, it adds, speaks volumes.
While it says it will never abandon the workers, what pull the party has to intervene, never mind the Government, is unclear. The matter has been referred to an Essential Service Arbitral Tribunal which meets later today.
