Sweeping changes hit police department following Port of Belize incident

By BBN Staff: Yesterday several people were injured by police during a protest at the Port of Belize Limited (PBL) compound. True to his word, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams has enacted several changes in the department following the incident.

Our newsroom has confirmed that Commander of Police Eastern Division Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP)  Alden Dawson has been placed on immediate administrative leave. ACP Edlin Lorenzo has also been replaced as the head of the Gang Suppression Unit (GSU) and several members from that unit have reportedly been transferred.

Members of the GSU showed up to the PBL yesterday and fired tear gas and rubber bullets at the protestors, who by Williams’s own admission were behaving peacefully. Williams stressed at a press briefing yesterday that he would be investigating the circumstances that lead to the situation playing out the way it did, after he gave specific instructions regarding how the situation should be handled.

“I tried as best as I could have to communicate with the commander on the ground to have made sure that this did not reach the stage it did,” Willaims added. “I have met with the senior command Eastern division and I hope that it is not a situation where someone decided to go above me and so as they so [lease. They have given som e explanation and I’m not too happy with it…”
