City Council repays staff

Posted: Friday, July 24, 2020. 2:00 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Belize City Council has repaid employees their first deferred paychecks without deductions as reward for their loyalty during the COVID-19 crisis.

The Council agreed it would neither reduce its services nor drop workers despite a heavy reduction in revenue.

Employees, over 400, agreed to a rotating system and half-salary through June, while the Mayor and councilors also saw their salaries cut.

With revenues now improved and recovered, the Council moved to return this money to employees as their families get ready for schools reopening.

The Council thanks residents of the Old Capital for their support.
