Debate over reopening schools moves to House

Posted: Friday, July 24, 2020. 3:08 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Former Education Minister Francis Fonseca addressed the issue of schools reopening for more than 100 thousand students on August 10.

He said he has no doubt of the Ministry of Education’s good faith efforts to prepare for the return of schools, citing the official 29-page document it has prepared.

As we reported earlier this week, the system is focusing on physical distancing, handwashing and wearing protective masks.

But Fonseca argues there has been limited resources put forward by the Ministry, leaving principals and general managers to reach out to corporate partners to find what they need.

With 16 days to go, too much of the burden has been placed on the schools to prepare, Fonseca said, citing the lack of counseling and psychosocial support called for by the Ministry.

Many are fearful and some have underlying health conditions and it can be very easy to spread the common cold in classes, never mind COVID-19.

Fonseca concluded that schools in his view are not yet adequately prepared and its wait and see as to whether or not they will be.
