“Presenting an authentic Belizean experience post-COVID-19 will be challenging,” says Tourism Industry Association

By BBN Staff: As the world prepares to resume global travel, the Belize Tourism Industry Association says that one of its greatest challenges going forward will be delivering the people-to-people interactions to visitors that has been the hallmark of an authentic Belizean tourism experience.

Stewart Krohn, second vice president of the Belize Tourism Industry Association and managing director for Naia Resort And Spa in Placencia Village, said that the majority of the resorts in Belize have been working closely with authorities in terms of implementing health and safety standards, which will ensure that both local and international travelers as well as hotel staff will be protected during their stay, but that those protocols are ultimately where the challenge lies for resorts in Belize.

“Traditionally, the Belize experience has been quite the opposite, we don’t have all-inclusive hotels in Belize, we don’t want all-inclusive hotels in Belize, but now we are kind of flipping the script because now you’re gonna stay at an all inclusive hotel. we’re gonna take our traditionally wide open wide ranging experience into an all inclusive one, and I think that is going to be very challenging,” Krohn said.

He stressed that Belize has garnered a reputation internationally for outstanding service and for exposing visitors to a wide range of experiences led by the interactions visitors have with people all over the country.

“We might think that Belize’s big attraction is our fabulous reef, our great jungles and all that, yes that;s important, but if you look for example if you go to Tripadvisor and look at the reviews for most of our hotels, the one thing that stays with our visitors is the human contact,” Krohn said.

Krohn, who is one of the panelists at the BTIA’s tourism forum being held today at the Best Western Belize Biltmore Plaza, also said that Belize is in a good spot as global travel begins to resume due to the country’s reputation and the fact that the country has a reputation of relatively incidents of COVID-19, but will also face a challenge given the heavy dependency on United States-based tourists, given the current severity of the pandemic’s impact in the US.
