US Chargé d’Affaires visits Arenal in adjacency zone

By BBN Staff: On July 23, 2020, the United States Chargé d’Affaires, Keith Gilges visited the village of Arenal in the Belize-Guatemala Adjacency Zone.

Gilges was accompanied by the director of the Organization of American States (OAS) office to learn more about the situation along the frontier.

The OAS mission, acting as an impartial arbiter, assists by accurately locating the sites of incursions and disputes.

The OAS then turns results over to the governments to find equitable solutions, while also supporting cross-cultural exchanges to bring communities together.

Villages like Arenal that occupy territory in both countries have been areas where nationals from each side can meet and work together, but now they also represent potential entry points for COVID19.

“The United States is deeply committed to supporting the ongoing confidence-building actions of the OAS, while assisting #Belize in containing the spread of COVID-19,” a statement from the embassy said.
