One charged for Belize Bank attempted arson; police investigating links to Port-union dispute

Posted: Monday, July 27, 2020. 6:41 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Kareem Arnold of Belize City has been arrested and charged for attempting to burn down the Market Square headquarters of the Belize Bank Limited.

Surveillance footage revealed Arnold, apparently alone, dropping off tires on the sidewalk on the Regent Street side of the Bank on July 23 in a Ford F-250 pickup, then setting them on fire with the apparent intent of arson.

Hilberto Romero, deputy head of National Crimes Investigation Branch (NCIB), said police are looking into “leads” as to the attempt being linked to last week’s mayhem at the Port of Belize Limited. The Bank was the agent for Private Investments Limited, former owners of the Port which is now in receivership.

PBL made redundant or terminated 36 workers last Wednesday, including 29 members of the Christian Workers’ Union (CWU). Police, specifically, the Gang Suppression Unit (GSU), treated otherwise peaceful protests as attempts to start a riot and struck down several persons with tear gas and rubber bullets.
