Four people left homeless following arson on Wagner’s Lane

Posted: Tuesday, July 28, 2020. 6:23 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: A house was set on fire last night, displacing a woman and her three sons from Wagner’s Lane in Belize City.

Orin Smith, Sation Officer at the Belize National Fire Service, explained that they got a call around 7:50 p.m. and dispatched two units to the area. Apart from the house that was completely destroyed, the houses in the immediate area all received varying degrees of fire damage. Smith said that the layout of the area also made extinguishing the blaze difficult. In one instance firefighters had to jump someone’s fence to gain access to an area of the burning building to extinguish the flames.

“The result of this fire indicates arson,” Smith said. “Investigations revealed that…a female and two other companions visited the structure and shortly after they had left, the fire was observed.”

Smith also said that they have not concluded what means were used to set the house on fire. Police say no one has been formally charged for the incident, but investigations are ongoing.
