By Aaron Humes: COVID-19 continues its grim march across the world.

The viral disease has now infected more than 17 million worldwide and killed nearly 670 thousand.

The United States and Brazil continue to lead the rally with more than 7 million infected between them and hundreds of thousands dead, but India has surged to third place.

Regionally, Belize’s neighbors continue to add new cases and deaths daily.

Our own count remains at 48 infected, 27 recovered and 2 dead. This puts Belize at 27th of 39 North American territories.

The vast majority of those infected are only mildly so, and some 10.68 million are fully recovered.

Efforts continue to search out the origin of the virus, its effects on the body and how to defeat it via either drugs or vaccine.

Readers are reminded to continue practicing social distancing, wearing of masks and limiting outside contact.
